Iyengar yoga has used props to support and promote proper alignment in inversions. Inversions are helpful to the immune system, and props enable students to access inversions for maximal benefit.
As we age, brain cells begin to dry and become dull and less sharp. Going up-side down brings rejuvenation and good health, and we fell mentally alert and sharp when inversions are practiced regularly. Props support students in innovative ways so poses can be held longer.
When we practice inversions, the blood flow to the chest and head is increased. The glands for controlling hormone balance in the body (pituitary, pineal, thyroid and adrenal glands) receive blood supply, and are stimulated to function effectively and efficiently. In Sirsasana, this refreshes the cells of the brain.
