Dubrovnik CROATIA

Dubrovnik, along the Adriatic Sea has become the hot travel destination for everyone from Game of Throne seekers to the biggest celebrities in sports, fashion and entertainment.

There’s so much to do in Dubrovnik and it offers beautiful Baltic culture and architecture. The Stradun (walking street) is picturesque with clock towers and marble floors where you can see traditional dancers. The walled Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filled with wonders, including Europe’s oldest pharmacy dating to 1317, inside a Franciscan monastery. You can spend hours exploring the labyrinthian small alleys filled with charm and personality.

Croatia is proud of its long and colorful history, filled with grand palaces, walled cities and postcard-perfect coastal villages. The walled-off Old City dates from the 11th century and the people fended off the Venetians, Ottomans and other empires to remain an independent city-state. A barbarian invasion and an earthquake forced the inhabitants of nearby Epidaurum to move to Laus, a small island separated from the mainland by a tiny strip of marshland. Laus (later called Ragusa) ultimately merged with the Croat settlement that become Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik has an interesting history, and the harbour dates back to the 7th century, while the rest of the architecture stems from the 14th-17th century period. Venetian governance influenced the architecture, and the city developed into a rich trade-state in the 15th and 16th century that profited from its location between Europe and Turkey. The city fountains have had drinkable water for centuries, so if the city would ever be surrounded, the city would always have enough water.

Dubrovnik Highlights

Dubrovnik is known for its history and architecture, but appreciating it can be even more exciting with a local tour of Dubrovnik’s Old Town, exploring landmarks including the Franciscan Monastery, Stradun monument, Cathedral of the Assumption, and more. Enjoy an intimate perspective of a walking tour as you gain insight into the city’s heritage and culture.

Learn about the real Dubrovnik; about how the city was once one of the richest maritime ports in the world. Dubrovnik never fails to awe; streets paved with white limestone, walls crowning the city, and medieval sandstone-colored houses awash with history. This 1.5-hour guided walking tour takes you deep into the city’s 1,400-year history, recalling ancient tales when Dubrovnik was one of the world’s most prosperous port cites. It tells tales of war and lets the tour-goer in on the culture of the city. After meeting at Pile Gate, begin the journey through history and through Old Town. Pass the Franciscan Monastery and admire Orlando’s Column, a monument on the Stradun inspired by the city’s long-standing freedom and sovereignty. See, too, Onofrio’s Fountain, built in 1438 at the end of a 8-mile (12-km) aqueduct that gave the city its water supply. The walk also stops at the Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace and the Cathedral of the Assumption, a baroque church built after the devastating earthquake of 1667.
